Rufous Hummingbird, male hovering at milkweed

Julie L. Brown, Photobirder (Indianapolis, Indiana, United States) on 31 August 2012 in Animal & Insect and Portfolio.

Colorado, July 2012 series

The gorget of the Rufous Hummingbird can often look brown in different light. This image is almost full frame. The noise level (magnified 1:1) was pretty high (which really affects image quality), but the histogram looked good-it wasn't underexposed. If it hadn't been so noisy, I would have cropped it more. Noise reduction didn't help much, either.

Josep from Barcelona, Spain

Woooooooooow! Hummingbirds can flap their wings 12–80 times per second (depending on the species), as documented... I don't know how fast is the Rufous species, but the action shot is impressive, breathtaking, superb capture. And light and colors are stunning. Really a wonderful shot for a beautiful and fragile creature
