At the end of March, 2013 I went to Arizona for a landscape workshop led by Don Smith and Gary Hart. The itinerary for the fourth day was to shoot the sunrise at Horseshoe Bend, then drive south to Sedona, where we would shoot our sunset location. Now, we go from spectacular to pleasant. One of the most famous scenes in Sedona is Cathedral Rock, with Oak Creek in the foreground. After a short walk from the parking lot, we found a group of people sitting in camp chairs at the water's edge, waiting for the sunset. Since I would not be able to set up my tripod in front of these people, I took a quick hand-held iphone shot and followed Gary down the trail that followed the creek. Every opening along the river was occupied. Finally, I found a spot on a little sand bar and sat down with my tripod. I will discuss this vantage point with tomorrow's post.
I tweaked this iphone 4 shot in Lightroom and NIK, but the low pixel count did not hold up to processing-thus the poor image quality.

This photoblog is my nature journal and travelogue. Many of my wildlife images were made in environments impacted by humans. My goal is to feature each animal in a way that allows the viewer to sense the essence of its life in the wild. The purpose of the accompanying narratives is to enhance awareness and appreciation of our natural world, as well as to inspire everyone to protect and care for it.
@Doug: Thanks, Doug. I cloned out some bright spots too. The building and trees are smudged, but don't take away too much from the scene. Fortunately, the famous rocks are the focal point. I should have at least put the iphone on a tripod here and done it properly.
@tataray: Merci!
@Curly: Yes, and it is all smudged from the noise reduction. This is really a poor quality shot, but it was the only one I got from this POV. A bit of bait and switch huh? I give you a series of good quality images, then throw in a crappy one! Better one tomorrow.
@Denny Jump Photo: Yeah, everyone wants to see these rocks at sunset. Those two ended up in my other shots downstream as well!
@Steven: Thank you, Steven. The iPhone can do much better than this. You really could not find Oak Creek?
@DarkElf: Well, thank you. The tones are beautiful, but the image quality is not!
