My Indiana Backyard Birds 2013
Indianapolis, Indiana
12-26-13

It was nice to be outside on a bright sunny day and watch the young RHWP foraging in a big maple tree in my yard. In addition to a cool bird, a cerulean sky background is always a treat for the eyes.

A new yard bird-an immature Red-headed Woodpecker . I was not aware that this species was in my neighborhood, but a neighbor recently told me that she had seen a pair in big trees behind her house. Perhaps the bird in my yard is their offspring. Click here to read the story on my WordPress blog.

Looking back through the dates of my images in this mini-series, it is notable that I made very few yard images in 2013. However, I did have two birding travel adventures in 2013: Maine in June (series ran Sep-Dec 2013), and Cape May in October (not yet posted on this blog).

This photoblog is my nature journal and travelogue. Many of my wildlife images were made in environments impacted by humans. My goal is to feature each animal in a way that allows the viewer to sense the essence of its life in the wild. The purpose of the accompanying narratives is to enhance awareness and appreciation of our natural world, as well as to inspire everyone to protect and care for it.

Everything is good about this shot, Julie. Pose, composition, bird and I love the light. Looks like beautiful winter weather!

@rick: Thanks, Rick. That was the day after Christmas. The rest of the winter was very cold and snowy. Even today it will only be in the 30's.

Anita from West Nottingham, Pennsylvania, United States

This photo shows the why of the bird's name. Lovely blue sky.

@Anita: Adults have all red heads. I've got more images from this month. When I post them you will see how the bird has changed. It looks like it is going to stick around.

You follow birds and how they change the way I follow flowers and how they change. What fun we have.

@Anita: Yes, I do and that is one of the things I most enjoy from my photography. It is fun!
